Adriana shares why they took The Giving What We Can Pledge alongside some tips for how to get started on your very own effective giving journey.

Member Profile: Adriana Saso-Graves

We recently spoke with Adriana Saso-Graves from Saint Paul, Minnesota. They shared with us their effective giving story, including their journey to effective giving, what motivates them to give, and what organisations they give to.

Tell us about yourself, what keeps you busy, what makes you tick.

I am a 22-year-old recent graduate of Macalester College. I received my BA in Philosophy and am now working towards developing a career in data science and machine learning, which will hopefully allow me to earn to give while also working at the cross-section of ethical AI and animal rights. I consider myself, above all else, a lifelong learner. I believe strongly that we should continuously better ourselves and engage ourselves in a community that will hold us to the standard that we are capable of achieving.

My effective giving journey began about 2 years ago when I took an ethics course to complete my philosophy degree. I, like many other students, was introduced to EA and utilitarianism during my studies. During the COVID pandemic, I received payments from HEERF (Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund) designed to support students from low-income backgrounds. They were very generous payments and I began to set aside, for the first time in my life, a decent amount of savings. I paid off my credit card debt. I didn't feel so financially insecure. I realized that it was ludicrous to take and keep all of the HEERF funds that I was being given.

I live in the Twin Cities and during the unrest following the murder of George Floyd, I used whatever amount I arbitrarily designated as “extra” to directly support Black peers, or sent them to mutual aid funds in the Twin Cities. As the unrest died down some, I realized that while I was mostly content with the way that I had spent my extra funds, I was also seriously considering how I would have used it if I had kept it and if I could have spent it better. I realized that even in my days of economic insecurity I could definitely spare at least $10-15 per month.

So I set up $5 automated payments to Feed My Starving Children, an organization that delivers nutritionally complete, vegan meals for $0.25 USD to children in need. I also set up small, recurring payments to AMF. My history with financial insecurity had prevented me from signing the pledge, despite the fact that I have known of its existence for some time. I have known what it's like to have to make it an entire month with $8 in your bank account (yes, just $8, and nothing in savings).

I also just went to Starbucks with a $10 gift card and bought a quadruple shot large soy latte and the total came out to $8. To be clear, I'm not ashamed of this purchase. The latte was delicious and the gift card was, well, a gift. But it occurred to me that there were many ways in which I could revamp my budget and increase my giving if I really committed to it. I haven't been in a position where I only had $8 to my name in over 4 years. I went home and calculated "How Rich Am I" and realized I was in the top 94% globally and I knew then I needed to sign up.

Why do you give? What motivated you to give originally?

Mostly it's the realization that almost nothing I could pay for with 10% of my income would outweigh the utility it could have for another person, especially when donated to an effective organization/charity. Granted, I do not have children and only have 2 cats, and my immediate family and I are in good health.

If I make $937 after taxes every 2 weeks making $15/hour, I often think about what I can do with that extra $187 per month. Groceries? Eating at my favorite plant-based restaurant? A new pair of running leggings and a book? That $187 can buy between 62.3 and 93.5 malaria nets (assuming the cost estimate is between $2-3 per net). Annually that's around 1,000 malaria nets for people who desperately need them.

Alternatively, that's 748 meals for children suffering malnutrition if I donate it to Feed My Starving Children (in other words, over 2 years of providing a nutritionally complete meal daily to a starving child). If I do that monthly, that's 8,976 meals, or 24.5 years' worth of daily nutrition. Is there anything right now that would be a better investment? If so, how? If I was in need of a malaria net or if I was suffering malnutrition and starvation, what choice would I hope for?

Sure, that $187 might help me feel more comfortable or hopeful about my future if I were to put it away in savings, but it helps someone else feel exponentially more comfortable or hopeful about theirs, considering that if I were ever in a place where $187 would make a huge difference in my life, I know that within a number of years my government, my family, and my friends would probably help me figure out how to get back on my feet. And there are millions of people for whom that sort of socio-political infrastructure does not exist.

Why did you take the Giving What We Can pledge?

I took the pledge because I know that whatever amount I donate will go farther for someone who lives in a country where $1 USD has much higher purchasing power. One may think that this could have an undesirable effect, in that someone could limit their giving since they might think that they don't need to give much to have a sizable impact. I, however, find it's the complete opposite for me. Giving as much as I can AND knowing how far my donations can go highlights the importance of giving to effective charities. What are the issues in the world that you care most deeply about?

There are so many issues that I care deeply about, but among the biggest are animal rights and climate change (big intersection there), as well as global poverty (perpetuated by issues related to malnutrition and universal basic income), and access to reproductive choice including birth control (for male and female individuals) and abortion.

Which organizations do you give to (and why)?

 - They’re highly cost-effective and work on a cause that has a clear path to impact.

 - They’re a religious-based organization that does not perform missionary work. They bring stability to children/communities who are lifted out of malnutrition.

 - They provide direct funds to individuals living in extreme poverty.

 - They have a strong commitment to animal rights and a strong rating on 

On occasion, sure. My career just got started and I make $15 an hour. In many metropolitan areas, this is the socially accepted or legal minimum wage. At times, I worry about slipping into the kind of financial insecurity that I have experienced previously, and I fear that donating will limit the full expanse of financial freedoms I have. I’ve found that often it's been the opposite, however. Realizing that I do have extra funds to spare and having seen the ways in which I am able to prioritize other things makes me feel much more eager to increase my income to do more good, but also makes me feel more satisfied with my current financial situation. Although at times, yes, there is a little voice in the back of my head that says "why can't we just wait until we are making $XX,XXX per year?" which is the same voice that says "why can't we just go to the gym tomorrow instead?" It's a stupid voice and I choose not to listen to it. Just because I can't have the impact I want to right away, it's certainly a bigger impact than I would have if I didn't give.

Do you try to effect change in any other way?

Yep! I volunteer at a local farmed animal sanctuary, I volunteer with the Humane League, and I also volunteer packing meals at Feed My Starving Children. In addition, I am working with my partner on an animal rights campaign and I am also working on opinion pieces related to topics of effective altruism, animal rights, and veganism.

What effective giving tips would you like to share?

If you're at all hesitant, I would set up a monthly recurring donation of $5 and see if you notice it missing. If you can't commit to 10% of your income, try 5% or even 1% and scale up when you have extra funds. If finances become a struggle, think of ways you can be involved in organizations that don't make as much money. Donating your time can sometimes not be as effective as donating your funds, but if you can convince others to donate their funds, that's no small accomplishment. If you can do both, that’s fantastic.

Have you found anything to be helpful in talking to people about effective giving?

Sometimes I like to ask people what's the dumbest thing they ever spent $20 on. Or if they remember the last time $20 fell out of their pocket and what effect it had on them. Was it a bummer? Probably. Would it have made them feel better to have given that $20 intentionally to an effective charity? Almost always.

Are there any other concrete ways that Giving What We Can has helped you?

I feel a lot more grateful generally speaking. I want to avoid the idea that we should always feel grateful just because others may have it worse, but thinking about the ways in which it could be worse does make you realize all the ways in which things are genuinely good. When I have a bad day, I usually come home and take a shower with hot water, have a nutritionally sufficient meal, and I can take a nap in my bed in my decently safe neighborhood. For most of human history, it has not been this easy to have your needs met.

For many of us, it can be hard to articulate what exactly matters to us and why. But getting to the root of what we really care about can often have surprising implications for where we should donate.

This design thinking technique can make you a more effective giver

Think about the most important cause to you — maybe it’s climate change, criminal justice reform, gender equality, or education policy, for example.

Why do you care about this cause in particular?

Now think about another cause that is important to you, but not quite as much as the previous one. Why isn’t it as important as the first cause? What’s the difference?

For many of us, it's hard to articulate what exactly matters to us and why. But getting to the root of what we really care about can often have surprising implications for where we should donate. In fact, figuring out what you truly care about could be one of the most important steps you take to increase your impact.

Here’s a framework that might simplify this introspection for you.

There’s a technique commonly used in design thinking that can help you better understand what you really care about.

 works by getting to the core of a problem by repeatedly asking “why” to understand cause-and-effect. It’s particularly useful because it can allow you to fix the root cause of a problem, not just something that is merely a symptom.

 Because we are receiving negative reviews about our delivery speeds.

 Because delivery times have nearly doubled in the past three months.

 Because our order-fulfilment system has had issues.

Why has our order-fulfilment system had issues?

 Because there is an error in the backend system.

Why is there an error in the backend system?

 Because we didn’t ask our software engineers to check the system when we changed our cloud-computing provider.

 The software engineers check the system and find that an important piece of software was not set up on the new cloud-computing servers when the switch was made. A note is made to ensure this software is set up next time the servers are changed.

This technique is not just useful for figuring out what is causing your software to fail — It can also help you become a more effective giver.

Here’s how you can apply it to the cause you thought about at the beginning.

Applying the five whys technique: homelessness in Vancouver

I grew up in Vancouver, a city with extreme affluence and staggering poverty. Vancouver is the kind of city where jogging at a brisk pace for 10 minutes can take you from a $4 million condo to one of the poorest postal codes in the entire country (yes, country). This area, called the Downtown Eastside, is rife with people experiencing homelessness (and often addiction) right in the middle of the streets.

It’s nearly impossible to visit the Downtown Eastside without feeling a tug at your heartstrings — one that tells you to drop everything you’re doing so you can help these people, no matter what it takes. I felt that pull as a kid. I still do. But upon thinking about other ways I could do good, it wasn’t clear to me whether I should instinctively follow that pull, no matter how much I felt the urge to do so.

The five whys technique can help make sense of the feelings and intuitions I had as a kid. Let’s apply it to homelessness to see if it can shed light on where I should focus my charitable resources.

 Homelessness is bad, and I want to fix it.

 Because people experiencing homelessness are still people, and nobody should have to struggle like that.

Why should nobody have to struggle like that?

 Because all people fundamentally deserve to live happy lives.

Why do people deserve to live happy lives?

 Because nobody should have to live a life of suffering, regardless of who they are, what they look like, or where they live.

Why should nobody have to live a life of suffering?

 Because if we can use our resources to prevent suffering, we should, no matter who it is.

Why should we prevent it, no matter who is suffering?

 Since suffering is intrinsically bad, I should support the causes that can prevent the most suffering, no matter who is helped.

So the deeper reason why I was drawn towards helping people experiencing homelessness is that I want others to live happy lives that are free from suffering, not because of anything to do with homelessness itself, per se. This is something that is deeply ingrained in my sense of what is right and what is wrong. Suffering is terrible, and I want to do what I can to prevent it. In fact, I want to prevent as much of it as I can: all else equal, I’d much rather live in a world with less suffering than one with more suffering. That much seems intuitive.

What to do once you know what you care about

So what does this mean for where I should donate? Not a lot — maybe donating to charities that help people who are experiencing homelessness is the best way for me to reduce suffering in the world. Or maybe not, which is why digging into the numbers is necessary so I can figure out the best ways to achieve my end goal.

Let's look at the numbers. Homelessness is an incredibly complex problem that policymakers often struggle to find effective solutions for. For example, San Francisco’s 

 for 2021-2022 included over $500 million for homelessness and supportive housing. With a total population of 

 currently experiencing homelessness, that works out to roughly $60,000 per person, per year. Conversely, 

 estimates that donating to a charity that works to prevent malaria costs around $4,500 per life saved. Looking at Burundi, a sub-Saharan African country with a 

, makes it even more apparent where my donations might be able to make the biggest difference. It’s unlikely that donating an extra $100 to a charity that works on homelessness in San Francisco is going to have a substantial impact, given the relative size of the budget. But an extra $100 can do a lot for someone in Burundi living on less than $1,000 per year — $100 would be a huge rise in their income!

To me, the choice is painful but clear. If I care about preventing suffering — and if my resources are finite, which they are — I have to make tough decisions about where I should donate. Homelessness is terrible, but so is extreme poverty or losing your child to malaria.

There are many problems worth solving in the world. But precisely because the number of problems outnumbers our charitable resources, we have to prioritise among the many causes that resonate with us. To do the most good you can, it can help to think deeply about what matters to you, and whether where you’re donating is the best way to uphold your values.

I understand that it isn’t easy to switch causes — we become attached to them because we care so much. That’s human nature. But changing your beliefs in light of new evidence and having a willingness to redirect your giving can be one of the most effective ways to increase your impact. If you want to have the biggest possible impact, don’t just follow your heart. Use it as a signal to help you discover what is important to you – and then act on that signal in the most effective way you can.

Chris Carpenter is the owner of a renovation company called Carpenter & Co, and has pledged 10% of his company's profits to highly effective charities. In this member profile, Chris discusses his previous battles with addiction and how his journey to sobriety allowed him to realise how much good he could do by giving to highly effective charities.

Company Pledge Profile: Carpenter & Co

We recently spoke with member Chris Carpenter from Toronto, Canada. He shared with us why he pledged 10% of the profits from his business to the world's most effective charities.

Tell us about yourself, what keeps you busy, what makes you tick. What’s your story?

Work keeps me very busy. I’m passionate about what I do and I put my whole heart into it. As far as my story goes, I would never say I’ve had a difficult life. I feel very lucky to be born into the life I have. That being said, I have struggled to take advantage of the gifts I’ve been given. My younger life was filled with loss and battles with mental health issues and addiction.

Three and half years ago, I had alienated everyone and everything I loved, I had nowhere to live, no job and no life. I had thrown away all the gifts I’d been given: a loving family, a beautiful supportive woman, an amazing healthy daughter, and more opportunities for success than many people in the world could only dream of.

September 18th 2018 (with a ton of support from those people I alienated and some amazing therapists and counselors) I turned my life around and got sober. As I traveled further in my journey of sobriety I began to realize all those gifts I had been blind to. Along with seeing my gifts, I began to realize how many people not only don’t have access to the things I’ve taken for granted, but also live through unimaginable suffering. That has inspired me to dedicate part of my life to giving back for all the good things that I only have because of the sheer luck of the life I was born into.

Tell us a bit about your company: what do you do?

My company is a renovation company. We specialize in finish carpentry and interior/exterior renovations. We maintain a high level of craftsmanship and make every attempt to make renovations a pleasant experience for our clients. I want my company to have a positive impact on the world and the construction industry. We recycle and minimize waste as much as possible, we aim to build to a high environmental standard, and I foster an inclusive and supportive work environment.

Tell us about your effective giving journey. What introduced you to effective giving? Where have you gone on this journey since then?

I was introduced to effective giving by Sam Harris’s podcast Making Sense. Will MacAskill’s episode about effective altruism made something click in my head. It all made so much logical sense to me — it made me feel shocked that I hadn’t seen it that way before. Then as I dug deeper into the work of Peter Singer and The Life You Can Save, it was so clear that I morally had no choice but to help those in need. It reminds me of those colourful pictures that, after you stare at it long enough, you see a 3D image within the abstract. Once you’ve seen it, you can’t unsee it.

Why did you choose for your company to take the Giving What We Can Pledge?

I chose to give through the company so I could maximize the amount of money I can give. As long as my company grows (I will never stop working to grow my company), I will continue to be able to help more people every year. That, and lately I have been advertising my giving more than when I first made the pledge, through social media and through my clients. I believe that the idea of giving in silence is mistaken. I think the more you share your giving, the more others are likely to do the same. Lately I have been giving Peter Singer’s book The Life You Can Save to my clients with their invoice so they can understand what we’re about.

What are the issues in the world that you care most deeply about?

I care most deeply about world poverty and the suffering of children. There is so much wealth In the world that the fact that so many people have nothing is just shameful for our modern society. And children are innocent, they deserve every opportunity to become the best people they can be and the more we support them the more likely they are to be able to have a positive impact in the world.

I give to GiveWell, The Life You Can Save, Eva's Place, and The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.

It’s so easy and fulfilling. As I said, I truly feel we are all morally obligated to help those that can’t help themselves. Open your circle of compassion to include all the people of the world. These children are exactly the same as your children, these people are the same as the people you love the most and would do anything to make happy. They feel love, they suffer, they have dreams and the desire to live a happy life just like everyone you know. I understand it’s natural to want to help those closest to you, but that basic instinct fails under scrutiny when you consider how much better the lives are of the people around you compared to those who suffer through no fault of their own.

What suggestions do you have for other people considering the pledge? What about companies?

I suggest you make a plan for giving that makes it easy. Make it automatic, like auto withdrawals or scheduled giving. Personally I assess my profits every quarter and give my 10% donation based on that. I think next year I’m going to adjust that to a yearly assessment. I’ll assess at the end of the year and set automatic monthly donations to each charity I support for the next year. Whatever you do, talk about it. Don’t give in silence. The more people see their peers giving, the more likely they are to give themselves.

What are your visions for the future? (These could be your own goals or what you’d like to see in the world)

I’d love to give more every single year until I’m no longer around. I don’t plan on retiring or stopping work until I can’t work anymore. I want to save as many lives as I possibly can during the course of my life. I’d like to have a positive impact on the world and the community around me. I’d like to be known as much for my giving as for the beautiful work we do as a renovation company.

This is something I’ve had some difficulty with, but I’m working on it. Some people don’t know how to respond when I talk about charity. I feel like some people think I’m boasting or acting superior, I do not feel superior to anyone. Many people think it’s great, but I hope to inspire more people to give and I’m working on the best way to do that.

It has helped me feel part of a community of like minded people that are committed to helping make the world a little better in their own ways.

High schoolers were given over $8,000 to donate to charity. Here's what they chose.

Giving What We Can is happy to announce that we sponsored six schools who applied to run a 

 in 2021! This post contains basic information about the program, including data from 2021 events and the perspectives of participating students and teachers.

"It has given me an opportunity to think of my impact on the world and what I can do every day to make the world a better place." — a student who participated in the 2021 NHS Charity Election.

 is a school-wide event in which high schoolers vote among three charities to decide which will receive up to $2,000 in sponsored funds. The mission of the program is to inspire young people to make a positive impact in the world, and in doing so cultivate a culture of giving and giving effectively. As a student-led program, Charity Elections are organised by student leaders, and each vote results in an additional $2 donation from Giving What We Can.

The program was implemented at six schools in 2021, with nearly 2,000 students participating and $8,762 donated to highly effective charities, including 

. The $3,348 gift to Project Healthy Children, for instance, can provide 

 with food-based micronutrient fortification for one year.

At both schools implementing a comprehensive event with ~700 students and pre/post surveys, students showed an increase in all four measured outcomes:

Making the world a better place is important to me

At three of the six schools, 100% of participating students indicated they voted for a cause they believe in. At the remaining three schools, 98%, 97%, and 95% of students indicated they voted for a cause they believe in. 28 student leaders earned Service Leadership Certificates, and students consistently indicated they “thought critically about what makes a charity effective” and “felt a sense of purpose or meaning.” Selected quotes from students participating in the 2021 Northfield High School Charity Election are listed below.

Student Leader Perspective: Northfield High School

As students of Northfield High School, we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the organisation of a Charity Election. Our AP Government & Politics class helped to organise and promote the 2021 Charity Election in grades 9-12. We found the experience very rewarding, and are proud to have made a positive impact on the lives of those who our contributions went towards, as well as to have broadened the interest in well-researched donations to deserving organizations here at NHS.

Our work mostly surrounded promoting the election to our fellow students, via such means as social media, PA announcements, and word of mouth. After the election, we conducted interviews and collected feedback to reflect on the effectiveness of our campaign. Overall it was a great experience (conveniently coinciding with our unit on elections and campaigns), which provided us a unique insight into the Charity Election process. We would love to work on future projects with Giving What We Can.

The Charity Election process gave us advanced insight into how campaigns and funding work, while simultaneously providing us with experience helping promote highly effective charities to the general public. It taught us leadership skills, problem solving, and was a very fun class activity, especially for a government and politics class, where there was so much to take away. Overall, the experience gave us fulfillment and knowledge while providing us with reason to promote donations to outstanding causes.

Teacher Perspective: Northfield High School

As a Civics teacher for the last 38 years, I take pride in educating my students about the importance of voting. Even though many of my students are too young to vote, I hope they consider the importance of this right and responsibility as a civic duty. Voter participation is essential to any democratic republic. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “Nobody will ever deprive the American people the right to vote except the American people themselves – and the only way they can do that is by not voting themselves.” No truer words have been spoken.

My AP Government & Politics class and Civics classes participated in the most recent Charity Election, sponsored by Giving What We Can. While the Charity Election is not a vote for an elected official, a ballot question, or a referendum, it is an exercise in voting. It also emphasizes the importance of being an educated voter. Walking into the voting booth for the first time, I hope my students have done their homework on the candidates or issues on the ballot. During the week leading up to the Charity Election, I had my students conduct research on the three charities on the ballot using two main questions: “Is the mission of the charity impactful? Is the mission of the charity evidence-backed?” It was an exercise that any voter should consider when deciding how to maximize their choice. The small group discussions surrounding each of the charities were lively and informative.

Nearly 700 students participated in the Charity Election at our high school. We, too, faced some of the same problems that are encountered any election day, such as voter apathy, efficacy, and turnout. Lessons learned can be used in our next Charity Election: How can we better inform voters? How do we make access to the ballot easier? How can we instill the importance of casting a vote and an educated vote? These same questions should be at the forefront of any election, whether for a charity that supports a great cause or for the next President of the United States. We should all fight for our democracy on Election Day and every day.

It's almost the end of the year --- we're wishing you a happy holiday and new year!

Many of us spend part of the holidays reflecting on how we can make a bigger impact in the new year. If there is one feeling we'd like you to take into 2022, it's a sense of excitement and optimism for the incredible opportunity you have to do good in the world by giving effectively.

In fact, we might be in one of the best periods in history to help others, as argued in this
