You can help reduce the greatest risks to humanity

Unsafe AI. Engineered pandemics. Nuclear war. Stable totalitarianism. Most of us can't work on these problems directly, but we can fund the people who do.

Our research team has vetted the best giving options in this area, so your donation goes where experts believe it will do the most good. We pool your donation with other donors' and allocate it quarterly, working with the expert grantmakers our research shows are best placed to maximise impact. It automatically stays current as our research updates, so you never have to track the field yourself.

Who we are

Giving What We Can is a global community of over 20,000 effective givers. Since 2009, we’ve given over $500M+ to highly effective charities and funds.

Our research team investigates charity evaluators and expert grantmakers, and only recommends the ones whose methodologies stands up. For global catastrophic risks, where impact is harder to measure than in areas like global health, that expert judgement matters more than anywhere else.

What your donation actually funds

Donations are granted out quarterly. The kinds of work supported include:

  • Safe AI development and governance. Technical research to make AI systems behave reliably, and policy work to make sure they're developed and used safely.
  • Pandemic prevention and biosecurity. Preparing for natural and engineered pandemics, which could be far worse than COVID.
  • Nuclear security. Policy research into lowering the risk of nuclear war and escalation.

These problems are enormous, but the field working on them is small, and funding is one of its real constraints. A donation today, especially a recurring one, directly grows what these grantmakers can do.

Want to go further than a one-off donation? Over 12,000 people have pledged a percentage of their income to highly effective charities. Learn about the 10% Pledge and Trial Pledge today.
