Kaiko giving campaign - Dec 25

Hi everyone,

We (Arthur and Daan G.) are very excited to kick off Kaiko’s first ever Christmas giving campaign: a chance for us as a team to support a few extremely effective charities together.

Why we're doing this

As we wrap up the year, many of us are reflecting on what went well, what we’re grateful for, and how we can have a positive impact beyond our day-to-day work.

This giving campaign is a way for us, as a team, to support a small number of carefully chosen and impactful causes that connect to the kind of work we do and the values we care about, especially around health and access to care. Even relatively modest contributions from people in our position can create a lot of impact.

At the same time, we know everyone has their own priorities, projects, and timing when it comes to giving. You are encouraged to take part if it feels right for you, to support other causes of your choice, or to do both.

How the kaiko.ai giving campaign works

For the next 10 days, we invite anyone who’s interested to:

  1. Make a donation (any amount that feels right to you), and
  2. Direct it to a small set of high-impact charities we’ve pre-selected.

Participation is:

  • completely voluntary and confidential

How much should you donate? Ultimately, it’s about what feels right for you; there is no “correct” number. If you’re still unsure, feel free to reach out to either Arthur or Daan

Giving match: we’re also excited to announce that kaiko will double team donations up to a total of 10k EUR.

The charities we’re supporting

Based on the extensive research base of Givewell (givewell.org/charities/top-charities), we’ve chosen three organizations that work on preventing disease and improving child health in low-income countries:

  • Against Malaria Foundation (AMF): funds insecticide-treated bednets that protect families from malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
  • Helen Keller International: supports vitamin A supplementation, reducing child blindness and mortality.
  • New Incentives: provides small cash incentives for caregivers to bring their children for routine vaccinations.

100% of the money raised will go to those three charities.

How we selected them

Charities are a bit like startups: some create vastly more value per dollar than others.

We wanted to:

  • focus on evidence-based programs where impact can be measured
  • prioritize places where each EUR/CHF can go unusually far,
  • find charities that have can use additional funds effectively, and
  • choose organizations with a strong track record and independent evaluation.

That’s why we landed on AMF, Helen Keller International, and New Incentives for this first campaign.

How tax deductibility works

For this campaign, all donations to the select registered charities are tax-deductible, under certain conditions:

  • In the Netherlands, for one-time donations, the part of your total annual giving above 1% of your income is deductible (up to 10%)
  • Because the donation is deductible, your tax bill decreases by your marginal tax rate of any amount donated beyond the 1% threshold.
  • For example: for every 1 EUR beyond the 1% threshold you donate, and assuming a 35% marginal tax rate, your effectively only spend 0.65 EUR

If you want more clarification what this would mean for you please feel free to reach out to Arthur/Daan

We’re also happy to hear any ideas you might have for a future round!
