Can I donate stocks, shares, or other appreciated assets?
Donating assets that have appreciated in value can be more tax-advantageous than liquidating them and donating the proceeds yourself.
Stocks and shares
We can accept donations of stock and shares in both the USA and the UK.
To get started, please get in touch and let us know:
The ticker symbol or share type, and the number of shares you plan to transfer
Approximate value
Your full residential address (required for due diligence)
Your preferred allocation. You can find a list of charitable projects and funds supported by our donation platform here. If you're undecided or would like some advice, you're welcome to book a call with our Director of Community and Partnerships, James.
For US-held stock, we'll send you our brokerage account information to arrange the transfer directly.
For UK-held shares, we've partnered with ShareGift, a UK charity that specialises in handling share donations on behalf of other charities. Once you get in touch, we'll introduce you to our contact at ShareGift, who will advise on next steps and arrange the transfer. A few things to note about UK share donations:
ShareGift is itself a registered charity, so you'll be making a tax-deductible gift to them directly (similar to donating via a DAF). They issue the tax receipt rather than Giving What We Can, though we'll acknowledge the donation on our end and it will appear on your dashboard.
The donation date on your receipt is the date of the share transfer, not the date funds reach us (which typically takes 4–6 weeks).
ShareGift don't charge explicit fees, but the value of your donation is based on the share price at the point of notification rather than at the point of sale. They say they typically round in the donor's favour, but for larger or more volatile holdings there could be a small gap between the notified value and the realised sale price.
Donating stock or shares in other countries is not currently supported. If you're based elsewhere, please get in touch and we'll do our best to help.
Cryptocurrency
We also accept donations in over 150 cryptocurrencies. See our cryptocurrency donation page for more information.
