Want to hear what it’s like to take a giving pledge? Speak with someone who’s done it.

Chat to a Pledger

Our community is full of generous people who’ve taken a 🔸10% Pledge or 🔹Trial Pledge with Giving What We Can — and some of them would love to chat! They aren't staff, just volunteers who are happy to share their story and help you get a feel for whether a pledge could be right for you.

It’s a friendly, 30-minute conversation at a time that suits you. You can ask anything — how they chose where to give, what it feels like to give a significant % away, or how they made the decision. You can also just talk through your own thought process on the pledge and whether you think it could make sense for you. No pressure, just a chance to learn and explore with someone who’s been there.

Steps to organise a call:

  1. Decide whether you'd like to:
    1. Tell us a little about yourself so we can connect you with someone similar to you who's taken a giving pledge. Or...
    2. Pick from the list of people below. You’ll find information about their background, their pledging story and their location.
  2. Submit the form to share your preferences.
  3. We'll reach out to introduce you and help arrange a time that suits.

FAQs

Who is this for?

This service is for people who are actively considering taking a pledge with Giving What We Can, and think that a personalised call would be helpful in making a decision.

Why would I do this?

If you've been thinking about taking a pledge and wanted to chat through your thought process with someone who has done the same thing, this could be a service for you!

Will you just tell me to pledge?

No. We aim to share some genuine considerations around your situation and pledging, rather than encouraging people to take a pledge no matter what.

What will we talk about in the call?

That's up to you! We're aiming to help you understand your own thought process on taking a Pledge. Some suggested prompts to think about before coming into the call:

  • If I didn't pledge in the next 5 years, what would the reason(s) be?
  • What impact do I want to have on the world, and can pledging to give help me get there?
  • Would I think that a stranger who is in a similar position to me in terms of finances, future plans etc. should take a pledge? Why?
