Giving What We Can

Volunteering

Giving What We Can depends on a large team of volunteers. Because of their hard work, we now have over 200 members, we've carried out in-depth charity evaluation and we've been able to raise more than $70 million in pledged donations. Each volunteer can make a huge difference: if your help results in just one extra person taking the Pledge, this would typically amount to an extra $200,000 donated to cost-effective charities!

We welcome volunteers from any country and it is not necessary to have volunteered for similar organisations before. There are three types of volunteering opportunity open to you:

1. Getting involved in a local chapter or starting your own.

2. Working on a self-contained project (we encourage you to try this option before moving on to number 3).

  • These are projects capable of being completed, such as helping to coordinate one of our events or designing a template poster for chapters, as opposed to positions which involve continuous responsibilities.
  • Please contact George with the subject header "Self-contained projects" to see our latest list of available projects.

3. Taking up a central position.

  • These tend to require at least 5 hours a week. We also generally expect a six-month minimum commitment, at least two weeks' notice for leaving the position and a willingness to assist with a handover (whenever that may occur), though we can be flexible on these things.
  • Below is a list of our currently available positions. To register your interest in a position, please email the relevant director listed below, including your CV and/or 100-200 words explaining why you would like to take up the position and why you think you would do it well. Note that some roles are divisible, so please still do get in touch if it is only part of a role that you interested in.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Operations Researcher:

  • Your responsibilities would include basic legal research into regulations about employment, incorporation, visas etc., presenting your findings to other volunteers and liaising with other teams to ensure the changes required by the research are implemented.
  • We would like people with some research ability, and the capacity to do this research online or over the phone.
  • You should be able to present findings, and the associated actions required, very clearly.
  • We would prefer long-term volunteers for this role, but candidates looking for smaller projects should also get in touch.
  • There is no particular location requirement for this role.

Grant Researcher:

  • This role would put you at the centre of expanding GWWC and moulding its future, a critical task – with a great deal of scope for individual autonomy.
  • Specifically, your responsibilities would include researching the different grants that GWWC is eligible for (as well as grants which we could be eligible for with some effort), and acquiring all the information about GWWC that is needed to apply for a grant.
  • We would like people with some research ability for this role – previous experience in a similar area would be very useful.
  • It would be extremely helpful if you could help with the actual process of applying for a grant – but this is optional.

Operations Assistant

  • A highly varied role providing lots of novelty. An operations assistant would help the operations team to adapt to changing circumstances, often spearheading efforts to move the organisation in new directions as well as ensuring its smooth functioning.
  • More specifically, your responsibilities would include research – looking into the cheapest and best options for a particular service – as well as numerous other roles such as ensuring a new management system is adopted correctly or overseeing office space.
  • This is a role which you can mould to suit your skills and interests – there is scope for expanding this role to take on new responsibilities, or reducing its scope and focussing on a few tasks.
  • For this role you should be well organised and analytical with some research ability.

Self-improvement is essential to becoming as effective as possible at improving the world. From procrastination elimination to cognitive amplification, the EE Team will gather the most promising techniques and tools we need to level up.
