CHAI was founded in 2016 by a group of academics in UC Berkeley, and is led by Stuart Russel.
What does CHAI do?
CHAI's mission is to "develop the conceptual and technical wherewithal to reorient the general thrust of AI research towards provably beneficial systems." Their work so far has involved research, field-building, and thought leadership. Read our page on promoting beneficial AI to learn more about why we think this work is important.
Is CHAI effective?
We think CHAI is one of the most effective organisations working on technical AI safety. We think this because their research output is impressive and because they have been recommended by Founders Pledge and supported by Open Philanthropy.
