Family Empowerment Media (FEM)

Family Empowerment Media (FEM)

Family Empowerment Media reduces maternal deaths and other health burdens due to unintended pregnancies.

What does Family Empowerment Media do?

Family Empowerment Media (FEM) enables couples to make informed family planning decisions through clear, compelling, and accurate communication. FEM launched in September 2020, with support from the Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program.

FEM’s mission is to eliminate maternal deaths and other health burdens from unintended pregnancies. It works with local partners in Nigeria to produce and broadcast radio programming that shifts knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours around family planning. Its model is simple, evidence-backed, and transferable to many regions in Nigeria and other African countries.

FEM brings a distinct approach to enhance its impact:

  • It uses innovative methods to rapidly test the effect of its radio-based campaigns.
  • It partners with values-aligned organisations in Nigeria so it can tap into local networks and build local capacity.
  • It focuses entirely on radio-based campaigns, allowing it to become exceptional implementers of a cost-effective solution.

Why do we list FEM on our donation platform?

One of our trusted evaluators, Founders Pledge, recently provided FEM a grant of $70,000 USD and indicated that its work looked promising. As such, FEM meet our criteria to be listed on our platform.

Giving What We Can does not take any fees from donors using our platform or from charities listed on our platform. We are independently funded to promote our mission of making giving effectively and significantly a cultural norm. Read more on our transparency page.
