GiveWell @ Giving What We Can: Rutgers
GiveWell (www.givewell.org) is an independent charity evaluator, founded by two donors in 2007 who were trying to make the most of their giving. GiveWell's mission is to find outstanding charities and publish the full details of their analysis to help donors decide where to give. We hope this creates a world in which donors reward charities for effectiveness in improving lives. We are seeking talented potential future hires or interns for the Research Analyst role, which primarily involves investigating charities to find the best giving opportunities.

2010 - 2011 events
Join a live conversation with Prof. Sachs, a leader in the fight against global poverty, repeatedly named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People. In this one-time event, Prof. Sachs's talk will be videostreamed from Columbia University to Princeton, Harvard, and Rutgers Universities, enabling us all to engage in conversation on the causes that matter the most. The event will conclude with a lecture and Q&A with Tim Campbell, a philosophy Ph.D. student at Rutgers, who will address the main concerns you may have with international aid. |
If we care about helping others, and really making a difference, how should we think about career choice? A natural thought is that the careers that do the most good are the service professions — being a doctor or NGO worker, for example. We argue that the standard approach to thinking about high-impact career choice is deeply flawed, and suggest a radical new approach to career selection that enables us to have a much greater impact. |

A Crash Course on Effective Giving
At the launch event for Giving What We Can: Rutgers, Peter Singer argued that we can make a massive impact on the lives of others by giving a portion of our income to the right places, without making any great sacrifices. Is that true? Does aid really work? How do we measure how well it works? And what does psychological research say about the relationship between happiness and giving?
1. Myths about aid: why the common objections to giving don't work. 2. Measuring impact and the distribution of aid effectiveness. 3. The relationship between happiness and giving. What does psychological research suggest about the relationship between giving and our own happiness? |
Peter Singer, Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, is the most influential and controversial philosopher alive. One of TIME Magazine's 100 "most influential people," his work has been translated into over 15 languages and is routinely taught in universities around the world. A question/answer period and book signing will follow the talk. This free public lecture marks the launch of Giving What We Can: Rutgers, an organization devoted to promoting effective philanthropy. |
