Giving What We Can

Giving What We Can: Rutgers is a community of people who use the most effective means for decreasing suffering in the world. We do this by giving to the most efficient organizations that cure easily treatable but debilitating diseases in the developing world.

We have regular talks and social events open to the general public. Watch the lecture Peter Singer gave at our launch event in December 2010.

Through our extensive research we discovered that some organizations are as much as 1,000 times as effective as the average ones. Giving $1 to them does as much good as giving $1,000 to an average one. So we are excited about how easy it is to do large amounts of good in the world and have made a commitment to give 10% of our income to the most effective charities we can find. For a person earning $24,000 per year, this would mean saving 5 lives per year (extending 5 people@s lives by about 30 years each), or preventing 10,000 missed days of school due to illness. These incredible sounding feats are within most people@s reach!

By giving more and giving effectively
we can have a big positive impact on many people@s lives.
