Giving What We Can: UCSD is a community of people who use the most effective means for decreasing suffering in the world. We do this by giving to the most efficient organizations that cure easily treatable but debilitating diseases in the developing world.
Our launch event was a lecture by Andrew Schroeder (Claremont McKenna College) about the state of global poverty and the ability of average people to have a profound positive impact in the lives of others. In April 2012 we co-sponsored an event at the Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs at SDSU, featuring Thomas Pogge. His talk was on the Health Impact Fund and Academics Stand Against Poverty.

We are currently hoping to expand our membership, especially to include more undergraduates. Moreover, we strongly hope to expand our chapter to become Giving What We Can: San Diego, which would include SDSU, USD, and other local universities and colleges. Our plan for the near future includes:
- A meeting in July to make plans for fall events (date TBD).
- Tabling and flyer distribution during early fall on-campus fairs.
- A lecture during fall quarter at UCSD given by a preferably local professor (philosophy, economics, or political science) who is a member or supporter of GWWC. If you have suggestions for possible speakers, please contact us.
Through our extensive research we discovered that some organizations are as much as 1,000 times as effective as the average ones. Giving $1 to them does as much good as giving $1,000 to an average one. So we are excited about how easy it is to do large amounts of good in the world and have made a commitment to give 10% of our income to the most effective charities we can find. For a person earning $24,000 per year, this would mean saving 5 lives per year (extending 5 people's lives by about 30 years each), or preventing 10,000 missed days of school due to illness. These incredible sounding feats are within most people's reach!

By giving more and giving effectively we can have a big positive impact on many people's lives.
